NEVER STOP!!!

 We just returned from the US Olympic training center with about 100 other Maximized Living doctors who are part of the Wellness Advisory Council to USA Wrestling, USA Judo, and USA Weightlifting. What an amazing spectacle. There is no doubt in my mind I will be at the 2012 London Olympics WITH these doctors taking care of this group of athletes. Please help us support this movement.  I spent most of the weekend interviewing Olympic athletes, Past Olympic and World Team competitors and coaches. We got to see the Colorado Rapids present our Maximized Living Counsel with a jersey with our name on it. If you did not know, we are the official group for the Colorado Rapids for Chiropractic and Maximized Living care. With all that aside, I could not help think of this practice and all the people in our town who desperately need and rely on weekly and regular adjustments to maintain and improve their lives.

One our speakers said something that hit me very hard. He started on a line of questions. The first went like, “If you found out that you were drinking contaminated water with fecal waste and rotting animal tissues and then switched to CLEAN water, would you ever one day just say: I AM DONE with drinking CLEAN WATER?” The next question went like this, “If you never brushed your teeth and one day found out that brushing and flossing was good for your teeth and gums to prevent and avoid serious problems and possibly death, what would ever possess you to stop?”

Then he went on to explain that once you TRULY understood what Maximized Living and Principled chiropractic were, why would you ever STOP getting adjusted on a regular basis?

I know I got hurt in high school and showed up in a chiropractor’s office to have my shoulder “FIXED” aka “get out of pain.” Once the pain was gone it was gone. Why would I ever get my spine and nerve system cleared unless I HURT. I was using chiropractic like an aspirin or a Tylenol. I was using it only when I hurt, so why continue? If it isn’t broke don’t fix it, RIGHT?

Here is the reality. You will never hear mainstream media or most people tell you to get your spine checked one time a week to promote and maintain health. Of the 178 hours a week you spend outside this office, the main stream is telling you how to think and take care of your health. You are bombarded with food and drug ads every second. In 2009 Big Pharma spent a collective 4.3 billion dollars to tell you what problem you have and what drug to take. (USA Today Aug 9, 2009) They spent twice as much money on drugs ads than on researching the chemicals they are promoting (Science Daily Jan. 4, 2008).

 I had no idea that chiropractic had a benefit other than helping you get out of pain when you get hurt. It was not until I went to chiropractic school and started seeing the overwhelming research that supports the fact that you need to be adjusted regularly to maintain and achieve peak health and life long function.

Dr Pero found that people under REGULAR chiropractic care had a 200% stronger immune system than the average Joe. 400% stronger than the average CANCER patient. The Chiropractic Leadership Alliance reported that DNA enzyme repair is increased with wellness chiropractic care. The microscope shows that after one week of a joint not functioning correctly and in its full range of motion, permanent scarring and damage occur to that joint.

 Here is the question: “When do you stop getting your spine checked weekly?” It better not be only for pain relief. It must be to improve your quality of life. I have had many patients tell me that if it were not for weekly adjustments they would not be walking or even be on the planet. Thank GOD!! The goal is and always will be to Maximize YOUR healing POWER for life.

Look, when a medicine provider puts you on a medication for high blood pressure or diabetes, when do they take you off the drug? NEVER!!! Once you get adjusted to maximize your function when do you STOP getting checked? The ANSWER: NEVER

Often you hear complaints from “authorities” that chiropractic doesn’t have any valid documentation. Nothing could be further from the truth. Here are many examples.

 

Blood Pressure

Yates RG, Lamping, DL, Abram NL, Wright C: Effects of chiropractic treatment on blood pressure and anxiety: a randomized, controlled trial. JMPT 1988; 11(6):484, 21 hypertensive patients. T1-T5 adjustments. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the adjusted group, but not in the placebo and control groups.

 

Vision Problems

Terrett AGJ, Gorman RF: the eye, the cervical spine, and spinal manipulative therapy: a review of the literature. Chiropractic Technique 1995; 7(2):43. Gilman G, Bergstrand J: Visual recovery following chiropractic intervention. Journal of Behavioral Optometry 1990: 1(3):3. Gorman RF: The treatment of presumptive optic nerve ischemia by spinal manipulation. JMPT 1995; 18(3): 172. Gorman RF: Monocular vision loss after closed head trauma: immediate resolution associated with spinal manipulation. JMPT 1995; 18(5):308.

 

Ulcers

Pikalov AA, Kharin VV: Use of spinal manipulative therapy in the treatment of duodenal ulcer: a pilot study. JMPT 1994: 17(5):310. 11 ulcer patients received chiropractic care. They were compared to 24 cases treated medically. The chiropractic group experienced remission demonstrated endoscopically, and pain relief an average of 10days earlier than traditional care.

Infantile Colic

Klougart N, Nilsson N, Jacobsen J: Infantile colic treated by

chiropractors: a prospective study of 316 cases. JMPT 1989;

12(4):281. A satisfactory result occurred within two weeks in 94%if cases receiving chiropractic care.

 

HIV

Selano JL, Hightower BC, Pfleger B et al: The effects of specific upper cervical adjustments on the CD4 counts of HIV positive patients. Chiropractic Research Journal 1994; 3(1):32. Over the six month period of the study, the control group experienced a 7.96% decrease in CD4 counts, while the adjusted group experienced a 48% increase in CD4 cell counts over the same period.

 

Nerve Root Compression

Sharpless, SK: Susceptibility of Spinal Roots to Compression Block. NINCDS Monograph 15, DHEW publication (NIH) 76-998, 1975, pages 155-161. A pressure of only 10 mm Hg produced a significant compression block, the potential falling to 60% of its initial value in 15 minutes, and to half its initial value in 30 minutes. After such a small compressive force is removed, nearly complete recovery occurs in 15 to 30 minutes. With higher levels of pressure, we have observed incomplete recovery after many hours of recording. Konno S, Olmarker K, Byrod G et al: Intermittent cauda equine compression. Spine 1995; 20(1):1223.

Compression of the nerve roots of the cauda equina with as little as 10 mm Hg resulted in decreased action potentials.

Rydevik BL: The Effects of Compression on the Physiology of Nerve Roots. JMPT January 1992; 15(1), pages 62-66.

Venous blood flow to spinal roots was blocked with 5-10 mm Hg of pressure. The resultant retrograde venous stasis due to venous congestion is suggested as a significant cause of nerve root compression. Impairment of nutrient flow to spinal nerves is present with similar low pressure.

 

Dysmenorrhea

Kokjohn K, Schmid DM, Triano JJ, Brennan PC: The effect of spinal manipulation on pain and prostoglandin levels in women with primary dysmenorrhea. JMPT 1992; 15(5):279. 45 Subjects. Experimental and “sham” control group.

Conclusion: SMT may be an effective and safe

nonpharmacological alternative for relieving the pain and distress of primary dysmenorrhea.

 

Pain

Hause M: Pain and the nerve root. Spine 1993: 18(14): 2053. Nerve root compression can exist without pain. Mechanical changes lead to circulatory changes. Inflammatogenic agents may cause chemical radiculitis. There may be disturbed CSF flow. The influence of the sympathetic system may result in synaptic sensitization of the CNS and peripheral nerves, creating a “vicious cycle.”

Wall EJ, Massie JB, Kwan MK, Rydevik BL, Myers RR, Garfin SR: Experimental stretch neuropathy. Changes in nerve conduction tension. J Bone Joint Surg Br January 1992; 74(1), pages 126-129. At 6% strain, the amplitude of the action potential had decreased by 70% at one hour and returned to normal during the recovery period. At 12% strain, conduction was completely blocked by one hour, and showed minimal recovery.

Dwight Freeney: Superbowl hopeful, using chiropractic to heal ankle

Dwight Freeney's ankle injury is a major story leading into this weekend's superbowl. Though the Colts have kept their cards close to the chest on the whole matter, some details have leaked as to what they are doing to treat the issue.

We do know that the Colts are very active with their treatments and Freeney is using some methods that have helped him in the past. The main one is Dr. Leon Mellman, Freeney's Chiropractor, is making sure not only his ankle is getting the proper care, but is also monitoring how his newly guarded walk is effecting the rest of his body. Most notably how his lower back could be adversely affected due to his newly acquired limp.

Freeney's injury is being treated as any other low ankle sprain would be in the NFL with some minor tweaks. Although he was seen in a boot very recently, he spoke openly about keeping the motion in the ankle joint to promote healing. Very recently this became common place in joint surgeries; where immediately following the surgery, the joint is put into passive motion to prevent adhesion buildup and promote a quicker recovery. We just held our best makeover ever. Those of you that were there saw an amazing line up of healers dedicated to making the world a better place. We started our day with two world class athletes at a wrestling clinic at Heritage High School right here in Vancouver, Washington. Coach Mac was incredible from Heritage and his track record of training and coaching Olympians is awesome. I was in AWWWW, just watching Mr. Lee Kemp, 3 time world champion, and hearing his life story was breathtaking. It was an unbelievable honor to spend the day with him. Ms. Leigh Jaynes, who is training relentlessly for the 2012 Olympic team, was a refreshing spirit. She is the true American Hero and what a great person. I know she will take Gold in 2012 in London please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.  (Makeover PICTURES)

Many of you left going WOW where do I start or what do I do? My first goal of the makeover was to get you aware that the current health model is not working. I am currently reading Dr. Weston Price’s book “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration.” An Eye opening story of the decline of human health and well being. After this weekend, it is even clearer to me that most people have no clue on what to do to get well and to stay well. 95% of all heath care dollars are spent on treating sickness and diseases. Only 5% is spent on health. That needs to change. Currently the average American spends approximately 5% on the promotion of health and wellness. This must change and is the entire focus of what we do and all the Maximized Living doctors’ main goal is to get you WELL and Keep you there for the REST of your life, not just when you have a health crisis or challenge.

I was watching CNN the other day at the gym on the treadmill and they were showing what the average American spends on health insurance each year. I was blow-away to find that it was over $15,000 per year and with the “New Proposed” plan in 2016 it will be in excess of 25,000.00. Many people are forced to get health insurance by an employer as a “benefit” but have to use the companies program. One of my patients said he is paying over $1,500 per month on a health insurance policy that he and his family rarely uses and he can’t get out of it unless he leaves his job. Paul Zan Pilsner wrote a book about what to do with insurance and I highly suggest you read it and apply the principals to your health and life.

Current trends show 30% of American obese and 60% overweight, what are we to do? With kids being sicker than ever and parents stressed more than ever, where do we start? Reducing the chemical stress burdens on your body is a great place to start. Anderson Cooper recently posted a video called, “Toxic Brew”. It is all about the chemical burdens being put on our bodies daily. You will get a glimpse of how all the “unregulated” and regulated chemicals are degenerating us at an alarming rate.

During the Maximized Living Makeover at the Vancouver, Washington Church of Christ I talked about the toxic top 10. I posted on my face book page, “Who wants to know about the toxic top ten?” Many people replied, “YES”, so here it is.

Three-time wrestling world champion and 2008 USA Olympic wrestling coach Lee Kemp will headline a clinic for area wrestlers on Saturday at the Heritage High School gymnasium.

The Team USA Wrestling Clinic will run 8-11 a.m. It is open to ages 5 and older. Its focus will be wrestling techniques, strategies, and proper nutrition for wrestlers, according to clinic organizer Troy Dreiling.

Cost to participate is $45.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. Advance registration will be accepted by calling Absolute Life Chiropractic at 360-260-6903.

Also appearing at the clinic will be Leigh Jaynes, who is preparing to compete for a spot on the USA women’s wrestling team for the 2012 Olympics.

Kemp and Jaynes are also schedule to speak at a Maximize Living Makeover event, scheduled 1-4 p.m. Saturday at the Vancouver Church of Christ, 9019 NE 86th Street. That event, which focuses on diet, is free and open to the public. click this link for more info.
